The Benton Harbor Housing Commission (BHHC) HOPE VI federal grant is designed to significantly improve Benton Harbor housing conditions and provide residents the opportunity to acquire skills needed for self-sufficiency. The BHHC was awarded the HOPE VI grant in 2004
In partnership with Harbor Habitat for Humanity, 50 homes are being constructed as part of the HOPE VI initiative. Another 70 new single-family rental homes will be sprouting throughout various blocks in Benton Harbor. Whitfield I sub-standard rental units are to be demolished. In the near future, the area formerly known as “The Flats” will begin transformation into Harbor Town with the intent to re-energize individual families as well as the local business community.
HOPE VI is future-oriented, but not merely in regards to the physical sense of new housing projects being erected. HOPE VI funding supports adults to take the necessary steps to become more self-sufficient members of the community. With the guidance of the Benton Harbor Housing Commission, Benton Harbor adults are taking classes that prepare them for jobs and homeownership.
Hope for a brighter future -- thanks to HOPE VI.
