With a landscape that begins at the lakeshore, travels through park-like neighborhoods and reaches into serene wooded areas, the Benton Harbor area provides an array of housing choices.
You can match your neighborhood to your lifestyle-enjoy the intimacy of a family neighborhood, or the convenience of apartment living. Whether you're looking for the charm of an older home, or the flair of new construction, our community has a home in line with your lifestyle.
Some of the key housing projects in the Benton Harbor community include:
Community Block Grant
The City of Benton Harbor provides funding for down payment and closing costs assistance for first time homebuyers desiring to live within the City of Benton Harbor. The city provides major and emergency rehabilitation assistance throughout the City of Benton Harbor to ensure that existing housing and new construction will enhance our community.
Morton Hill
Morton Hill has the first market-rate single-family homes constructed in Benton Harbor in 25 years, yet the neighborhood success doesn’t end there. The ripple effect is alive and well. Neighboring old houses are now getting labor and love.
Brunson Hill
A recently completed housing project in Benton Harbor is Brunson Hill, the first component of Benton Harbor Housing Commission’s HOPE VI. The 48 single-family rental units in Brunson Hill, initially developed by Star Development, were folded into HOPE VI when the Benton Harbor Housing Commission application received a HOPE VI federal grant. HOPE VI also includes the demolition and construction of rental properties, erection of single-family homes and row houses, and development of the waterfront and commercial sites.
Harbor Town
One HOPE VI component is considered the most ambitious land redevelopment and housing project in Cornerstone Alliance’s history Harbor Town. On approximately 47 acres known to many as “The Flats,” Harbor Town proposes new infrastructure, single-family residences, condominiums, and commercial establishments, as well as the enhancement of the existing waterfront development -- all steps that will contribute to the revitalization of downtown Benton Harbor.
Harbor Habitat for Humanity Homes
In close proximity to downtown Benton Harbor, Harbor Habitat for Humanity is building more houses, yet another HOPE VI component. For further information on Harbor Habitat, check out their web site at www.harborhabitat.org.
A Growing Number of Loft Apartments
For those who merely want to step out their door into a growing and vibrant arts community, renting a loft in downtown Benton Harbor would be ideal! Although still in the development stage, word has it that the Lofts Project is another success waiting to happen.
Picture an artist living and working in a space customized to suit his/her specific needs a concrete floor for a painter, wood floor for a dancer or a “dirty space” to handle potter’s medium. The creative possibilities for the lofts are endless. Just ask the few creative pioneers already enjoying “lofty” living conditions.
